Participant in the expert meeting at the Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam) on Thursday 6 July 2023 during which specialists in the field of 19th-century printmaking and Van Gogh experts did meet to shed new light on Vincent van Gogh’s one time etching adventure in Auvers-sur-Oise (France); see Dr Gachet & Van Gogh. 日本銅版画 Nihon dō-banga: Etsen in Japan, 1783–1900, presentation on the Japanese school of etching before the introduction of Western intaglio printmaking processes, including a display of original Japanese etchings and Japanese books illustrated with etchings from the 19th century; this presentation was part of the exhibition Exchange België x Japan, in the year of the Olympic Games in Japan – that were postponed to 2021 due to the ensuing pandemic – in Het Gasthuis, Gasthuisstraat 22, Aarschot, Belgium, on Saturday 11 January 2020 at 15.00h.

‘Ohne Farbe kein Druck: Gutenberg und seine Druckfarben’, presentation for the Annual Conference 2018 of the Internationaler Arbeitskreis Druck- und Mediengeschichte (IADM), Johannes Gutenberg – der erste „Ingenieur“ der Drucktechnik Neue Fragen und innovative Antworten zur Realisierung des Buchdrucks, Mainz (Germany), 1–3 November 2018, at 2 November.
The conference discussed the various material-technical activities of the workshop of Johann Gutenberg (1395/1400–1468), inventor of typography and co-producer/publisher of the first printed book, a Latin Bible, in Europe; for the programme see here (PDF, 209KB). My presentation concerned the material aspects of Gutenberg's black and red printing inks.
